That company retreat will not fix your team’s issues. And deep down you know it.
Here’s the hard truth: retreats don’t fix communication problems.
Systems and shared understanding do.
Research shows that only 23% of employees strongly agree they understand how their work connects to company goals.
Let that sink in.
If you have 10 employees, maybe 2 truly understand how their work matters.
If you have 100 employees, only about 23 do.
So let’s be honest.
How is pickleball going to fix that?
It won’t.
When teams don’t understand the bigger picture, problems don’t disappear they multiply. And as your company grows, those problems don’t just stick around. They get more expensive.
When clarity is missing, the results are predictable:
Burnout
Decision bottlenecks
Decision fatigue
High performers quietly looking for the exit
You can’t grow sustainably like this.
And to be clear retreats aren’t the problem.
Using them as a substitute for clarity is.
What teams actually need is much simpler (and much harder):
Clear company goals
Clear expectations
Clear roles and decision-making
A shared understanding of how day-to-day work moves the business forward
When people know what matters, and why, work gets easier.
Decisions happen faster.
Leaders stop being the bottleneck.
Teams perform instead of guessing.
So no, you don’t have to skip the retreat.
But don’t confuse team bonding with team alignment.
Retreats can build morale.
Clarity is what builds performance.
If you’re serious about sustainable growth, start there.
Here’s the real question:
What would change in your business if every person on your team clearly understood how their work connects to your goals before you planned the next retreat?
